- site
body: "\t\tSo, what is de.lirio.us?
\r\n
\r\nA combination of the social bookmarking, tagging & blogging phenomenons in one little package.
\r\n
\r\nWhat do you do with it? Post website addresses you find interesting, tag then with keywords like "spain", "dog", "ipod", "posters", etc as appropriate. You can also includes a brief description, and longer detailed notes (these can also be blog posts.. more later).
\r\n
\r\nHow to get started? Register, login, go <a href="http://de.lirio.us/rubric/doc/help">here</a> drag those links to your browser's bookmark bar, find a site you want to bookmark, or show others, hit those links you just dragged & it will give you a form. Fill it out, hit save & off you go.
\r\n
\r\nHow's this different from other social bookmark sites? Well, for one we're including the highly useful notes feature. When you post, there is a nice long "body" section to the form. I'm writing in it right now to write this! Also, the entire site is <a href="http://de.lirio.us/code/">open source</a>. See the buttons at the bottom of the page. You can hack the code in it's entirety. New and cool features are literally at -your- fingertips. Well, and your keyboard.
\r\n
\r\nBlogging: This can be a bit tricky at the moment but here goes: Start a new entry, pick out a tag for your blog. This one is delirioussiteblog. Insert the uri:http://de.lirio.us/rubric/entries/user/<b>yourusername</b>/tags/<b>yourtage</b>
\r\nin the uri: field. Make sure you always use that as your uri! This is a social site so people can also post to your blog. Use this if you're brave! 8^)
\r\n
\r\nWhat's with the name? It only seemed right to go with the .us domain name thing happening around the bookmarking/tagging trend. That and I couldn't find a cool one like Flikr."

\r\n
\r\nI forgot to mention this earlier, but a critical part of the de.lirio.us blog is, of course, reading all the blog posts. Not just the headers. Although that's how I read rss feeds in bloglines?! Anyway, you can do both. I have to make a workable link here somehow....
\r\n
\r\nAnyhoo. My blog is at http://de.lirio.us/rubric/entries/user/comforteagle/tags/delirioussiteblog by adding ?long_form=1 to the end you can read the blog with the posts in full view without having to click anything. I suggest using that URL for pointing others to your blog here. <a href="http://de.lirio.us/rubric/entries/user/comforteagle/tags/delirioussiteblog?long_form=1">here's this blog</a> using the tag."

\r\n
\r\nWhat can you expect from The Professor's Den? Right now, I'll probably just talk about how cool de.lirio.us is. Afterwards, who knows? Here are some ideas.
\r\n
\r\n<a href="http://de.lirio.us/rubric/entries/tags/mac">Macintosh</a>: I'm a new user, but I love my iBook. Follow along as I crash it in an attempt to get used to my new enviroment.
\r\n
\r\n<a href="http://de.lirio.us/rubric/entries/tags/d20">Dungeons and Dragons</a>: I am Gulstaff! naaah!
\r\n
\r\n<a href="http://de.lirio.us/rubric/entries/tags/java">Java</a>: I love coffee and I love programming. Watch as I attempt to learn both how to make a good cup of joe and program in the language that shares the name-sake.
\r\n
\r\nYour Role: Of course, de.lirio.us and blogging are both about social aspects as well. What is your role at The Professor's Den? Well, if selling your soul isn't quite your cup of tea, here are some ideas.
\r\n
\r\nTell me what you want to see by posting in the tag "profsden"
\r\nRespond to my posts by posting in the same tag
\r\nDrop in, say hi (same tag)
\r\n
\r\nI'm a feedback whore, so please say something.
\r\n
\r\nNow if you'll excuse me, I'm off to explore this wonderful tool (the website)."

\r\n
\r\nHi Steve,
\r\n
\r\nYou've produced a somewhat interesting mix of del.icio.us and blogging... I was always sad that more people didn't use http://pasta.cantbedone.org/ and that it wasn't somehow integrated to extend del.icio.us' function optionally to produce just such a mix. So you've found a gap/niche as far as that goes, and it could be cool.
\r\n
\r\nBut I have to ask: why so obviously copy del.icio.us? Domain name, site design, functionality... the sweet spot isn't THAT sweet. I think it would have been nicer if your flattery of del.icio.us weren't quite so imitative. And I just read on the CPAN forum of Rubric that Joshua feels the same way. I'd say it's pretty important to become more clearly different for your sake, if you want any serious attention. IMHO, blog functionality plus open source only has a chance of really attracting the developer sorts on del.icio.us -- and I don't like the idea of the user base being fragmented. It might mean a third entity will have to pop up to bridge the gap. I know I don't have any plans on leaving del.icio.us a) without my bookmarks and b) unless I have a damn good reason, and I already have a blog.
\r\n
\r\nI guess what I'm asking for is a mission statement of some sort :)
\r\n
\r\nAnyway, good luck."

\r\n
\r\nOther users then rate how helpful those comments and suggestions are and the most helpful ones rise to the top.
\r\n
\r\n<a href="http://www.consumerpedia.org">Consumerpedia</a> has no built in category hierarchy, but rather uses a unique user-driven hierarchical tagging system. This lets users create and define the relationships between different topics, helping others easily discover and browse related information (this is similar to that mythical college campus that was initially built without sidewalks so that they could later be properly placed over the dirt paths created by actual foot traffic patterns).
\r\n
\r\nShort version: the Consumerpedia system is designed so that it evolves based upon how actual users wish to use it, with the sole organizing principle being how helpful it is to others."

body: "\t\tThe personal blog feature here on de.lirio.us seems to have a spinoff function: minus the "/user/username/" before the "tag" part of the URL, and with "?long_form=1" included at the end, it's a public forum for tags, rather like Tagsurf.com.
\r\n
\r\nMy first suggestions:
\r\n
\r\n1. The 'rubric' and 'entries' parts of the URLs seem to be universal. Are they needed? Things would look simpler without them.
\r\n
\r\n2. Usernames should perhaps be links under pages with ?long_form=1
\r\n
\r\n3. It would be good to see the public forum / personal blog side of the site exploited a bit more. For example, the delirioussiteblog, at:
\r\n
\r\nhttp://de.lirio.us/rubric/entries/tags/delirioussiteblog?long_form=1
\r\n
\r\ncould have a list of users who've posted to the blog down the right-hand side. Seeing who's posted, and filtering down to that one user, would then be easy.
\r\n
\r\nSimilarly, the page down at the singular user's level, with the /user/username part of the URL included, ie. the personal blog, could have a link to the public forum for that tag on their page.
\r\n
\r\n4. I'm sticking with del.icio.us for my bookmarks for now; I'm too stuck to it at this point. I may use de.lirio.us as a blogging tool of some kind. It would be nice to see the two merge into one, but if not, suggestion #3 above would help differentiate the two."

- missionstatement
- site
body: "\t\tI've been asked to <a href="http://de.lirio.us/rubric/entry/88">clarify</a> de.lirio.us's reason for being. A mission statement. That reminds me of Tom Cruise in <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116695/">Jerry MacGuire</a> repeating over and over whenever life got tough... "It's was only a Mission Statement".
\r\n
\r\n<h2>Mission Statement (WTF?)</h2>
\r\n1. To be a completely open site for exploring social bookmarks, tagging/folksonomy, and other social features that other users may want to explore.
\r\n
\r\n<i>I wanted to explore the social bookmarking, tagging/folksonomy thing quite some time ago previous to launch. I wanted to play with some code, but hacking up the code from the ground up was daunting at best. I found the code the runs de.lirio.us, began playing with it and immediately saw the benefit of having a site where anyone can play with the code to their delight to make it better. The entire code base is open to anyone, not just an API.</i>
\r\n
\r\n<i>This means that if someone wants to implement a feature they don't have to wait for me to do it. Send it to me! Does it work? Do others want it? No problem then!</i>
\r\n
\r\n2. To be a full service to our users.
\r\n
\r\n<i>That's loaded huh? The truth of it is that I have the resources to keep the service up and running. If it needs more servers it will get more servers.</i>
\r\n
\r\n<i>I wish I could just donate servers to other such services, but that doesn't coincide with goal number 1.</i>
\r\n
\r\n3. Have some fun with it.
\r\n
\r\n<i>It is just a website/service after all.</i>
\r\n
\r\nOk, so that's the end of the mission statement. Short 'n sweet I say. Now for some more Q's. I've also been asked to "why so obviously copy del.icio.us? Domain name, site design, functionality". I answered this <a href="http://de.lirio.us/rubric/entry/4">here</a>, but it's worth expanding more.
\r\n
\r\nI'm totally open to changing the look. I don't want it to look just like del.icio.us. I suck at CSS so if you're up to it. Send something my way.
\r\n
\r\nThe name: I totally fess up to the domain name. I've had sites before with terrible names that didn't communicate what the site was about & had to live with the mistake. I didn't want to repeat that mistake.
\r\n
\r\nI think the de.lirio.us name acts as an icredibly strong signal to anyone who sees it & is interested in social bookmarking et al. that this is indeed what the site is about. You don't have to read a description to understand, write detailed blog posts to describe. The name says it all to anyone who knows about this memespace.

body: "\t\tCongrats, this is a great social bookmarks implementation. I like the new possibilities I see.
\r\n<blockquote style="border:1px dotted black;">Nilate said:
\r\n1. The 'rubric' and 'entries' parts of the URLs seem to be universal. Are they needed? Things would look simpler without them.</blockquote>
\r\nWith regards to nilate's request #1, I'd like to second the motion. Cruft-free urls are very nice things to have, and I hope that this will be a serious design consideration.
\r\n
\r\n- In the body area, I'm not seeing any indication of what type of tags are allowed, but I noticed an image in an entry. Information about allowed tags would be helpful in the site's 'help' section.
\r\n- To continue on subject of the 'body' section of the entry: if tags are allowed, a preview option would be useful. I'm just getting started with this interface (this particular post being my first) and I'm not sure how mutable posts will be once they're saved, but a preview would be nice regardless.
\r\n
\r\n<ins style="color:orange; font-size:25px; border-bottom:3px dashed green;">Update:</ins> I'm in the process of answering my own question about the allowed tags.
\r\n<ins style="color:green; font-size:9px; border-bottom:4px solid red;">Another update</ins>: I noticed that it's painfully easy to overwrite an entry's metadata by creating another entry with the same URL. A bug? I'd really like to get a quick heads-up before I'm allowed to overwrite my previous notes."

\r\nIn his response, Michael Schiavo urged justices not to intervene because his wife's case already has been endlessly litigated and at each turn courts have sided with him.
\r\nHis filing also argued that Congress violated the Constitution when it passed the bill because the action was improperly intended to overturn state court rulings on the matter.

\r\nFor all you folks looking for features.. some aren't ready yet... but are on the way. As an open source project we've released early.
\r\n
\r\nWhich leads me to the first issue of the day. Releasing code. The site runs on Rubric (see RUBRIC PWD button below), a Perl program by my new friend Ricardo Signes. Since we've only begun here I've not been inclined to tweak Ricardo's code. That and I'm a dreadful programmer. However; even now of course somethings have changed. The website templates have been changed so it's important to put those out there as a beginning so you can have a current working version of what you see here. I'd like to see all work to Rubric go there. Forking/Branching etc is something I'd like to avoid at all costs for the benefit of everyone!
\r\n
\r\nI also started, with this post, a deliriouswishlist tag. Post as you will & remember, if you have the skills you can implement anything you want here!

description: Michael Geist on incoming Canadian copyright reform

body: "\t\t" \t
\r\n
\r\nIndustry Canada and Canadian Heritage, the two departments responsible for copyright policy in Canada, this morning released a joint statement on plans for copyright reform. There is an additional FAQ that fleshes out the issues. A bill is expected this spring and the statement spells out where Canada is headed. The key points include:
\r\n
\r\n1. The government will implement the WIPO Internet treaties. Note that the government now speaks of implementing, rather than formally ratifying, the treaties. They indicate that they will consider ratification after this bill is passed.
\r\n
\r\n2. The package will include an anti-circumvention provision applied to copyright material. There is no mention of extending the provision to devices (as is the case in the U.S.) and the specific reference to applying the provision to copyright material suggests that the provision will limit its applicability to circumvention to commit copyright infringement. The rights management information is similarly limited to instances to further or conceal copyright infringement. While no anti-circumvention provision would be better, this suggests that the Canadian provision will feature some real balance.
\r\n
\r\nMoreover, the FAQ makes clear that the circumvention of a TPM applied to copyright material will only be illegal if it is carried out with the objective of infringing copyright. Legitimate access, as authorized by the Copyright Act, will not be altered. This is very different from anti-circumvention provisions found in the U.S. However, the FAQ also notes that circumvention for the purposes of private copying will not be permitted, meaning people may find themselves paying for a CD and paying a levy on blank CD yet unable to make the copy of the underlying CD.
\r\n
\r\n3. The recording industry gets some of their package a making available right and a full reproduction right for performers.
\r\n
\r\n4. A notice and notice system for ISPs rather than notice and takedown. Canadian ISPs will only be required to notify their subscriber of an infringement claim, not take the content down as is found in the U.S. The ISP will be required to retain subscriber information, however to ensure that it is available should litigation later arise.
\r\n
\r\nThis is a major development as it implements a much fairer system than that found in the U.S. (or even the more draconian notice and termination system that CRIA raised last spring). The FAQ argues that this system is better suited to a P2P world, since notice and takedown simply doesnt work for P2P.""

body: "\t\t"Many a visitor to New York's Museum of Modern Art has probably thought, "I could do that."
\r\n
\r\nA British graffiti artist who goes by the name "Banksy" went one step further, by smuggling in his own picture of a soup can and hanging it on a wall, where it stayed for more than three days earlier this month before anybody noticed.
\r\n
\r\nThe prank was part of a coordinated plan to infiltrate four of New York's top museums on a single day.
\r\n
\r\nThe largest piece, which he smuggled into the Brooklyn Museum, was a 2 foot by 1.5 foot (61cm by 46 cm) oil painting of a colonial-era admiral, to which the artist had added a can of spray paint in his hand and anti-war graffiti in the background.""

\r\n\t<blockquote><p> There is problem with free speech in the USA:</p>
\r\n
\r\n\t<p>Judge
\r\nGwin of the Federal District Court of the Northern District of Ohio has
\r\nrecently held that software is not protected by the First Amendment
\r\nbecause it is a functional device' like a telephone circuit. </p>
\r\n\t<p> For more read Editorial in Slahdot: <a href="http://slashdot.org/articles/980811/2153219.shtml">Open Software & Constitutionally Protected Speech</a> </p></blockquote>
\r\n\t<p>So software != speech, right?</p>
\r\n\t<p>What if it did?</p>
\r\n
\r\n\t<p>Enter <a href="http://personal.sip.fi/%7Elm/c2txt2c/">c2txt2c</a>: Accurate language to inaccurate language (and back) translator.</p>
\r\n\t<p>It turns code written in the C programming langage into English language. It can also turn the English back into C. </p>
\r\n\t<p>Take
\r\na moment and read what Judge Gwin says again. Software is not language,
\r\nand is not speech, ergo it is not protected under the First Amendment.
\r\nWhat about language describing software? What if you developed an
\r\nalgorithm which can understand language describing software and
\r\nproduced working software from it? What if you released it as free
\r\nsoftware under the GNU public license? The algorithm itself wouldnt be
\r\nprotected, according to Judge Gwin. But what if you implemented c2txt2c
\r\nin C, then used it on its own source code? That would make it protected
\r\nspeech (in theory, as long as algorithms implemented in the English
\r\nlanguage, count as protected speech).</p>"

body: "\t\tThere's <a href="http://lists.burri.to:8080/pipermail/delicious-discuss/2005-March/date.html">some discussion</a> about de.irio.us on the <a href="http://lists.burri.to:8080/pipermail/delicious-discuss/">del.icio.us-discuss mailing list</a>. Some of the users aren't very happy about the similarities, but I think this is a bit reactionary. There is one profound difference in these sites, appearances aside: de.irio.us is open-source and free to the public. This offers a sense of security that del.icio.us doesn't plan to match, at least in the near-term.
\r\n
\r\nJoshua has yet to weigh in on this, but I doubt he's going to take issue with the similarities between the sites. As someone else on the mailing list mentioned, this is an AND, not an XOR. These sites don't compete, nobody is making money (indeed, these sites, bottom line, cost someone money). It would really be nice to see an import/export feature added to social bookmarking sites like this one, using what someone described as a SBML. It would be very useful, and would eliminate any hint of competition between the two sites.
\r\n
\r\nFrankly, I fail to see how the sites can really be seen as competing for anything but mindshare. These sites cost money to operate, and have not disclosed any plans to exploit their userbase for profit any time in the future.
\r\n
\r\nAnyway, in a nutshell, I wish for importing and exporting my bookmarks conveniently. This would be nice."

body: ' In this report from The Brookings Institution, Christopher B. Leinberger explores the key facets that are necessary to effectively revitalize downtown areas. In the report, Leinberger comments on the importance of "fostering walkable urbanity", but is also mindful to also note that creating such types of places is at times vastly complex. Some of the twelve steps offered here may sound familiar to many, including the oft-suggested remedy "Create an Urban Entertainment District" and "Re-create a Strong Office Market". The report itself is 124 pages, and is divided into chapters that include "Population and the Environment" and "Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment". The report also contains a number of rather helpful graphs and tables, such as one that tracks world population growth from 1950 to 2050 and the proportion of population over age 65 by region in 2000 and 2050. body: "\t\t<p>A Greasemonkey extension that adds tag auto-complete
\r\ncapabilities to the traditional del.icio.us posting areas.
\r\nThis is a powerful extension which can greatly increase your
\r\ndel.icio.us posting speed. I've spent some time playing
\r\naround with it, thus far, and it's been helping me out
\r\nsignificantly.</p>
\r\n<p>The premise behind this extension is that it goes through
\r\nyour existing 'Post' page, takes the tag data from within
\r\nthe page and gives you auto-completion capabilites of it.
\r\nCurrently, the traditional posting interface (<a href="http://ejohn.org/files/autodelicious.jpg">Screenshot</a>)
\r\nand the
\r\n'experimental' interface (<a href="http://ejohn.org/files/autodelicious-exp.jpg">Screenshot</a>)
\r\nare both supported. However, the
\r\npopup posting interface is not supported as it does not
\r\ncontain any tag data.</p>
\r\n<p>It appears that another <a href="http://lists.burri.to/pipermail/delicious-dev/2004-July/000043.html">auto-complete
\r\nhack</a> was done a while back but only returns a 404 error
\r\nnow. After doing some more digging around I was able to find
\r\n<a href="http://www.dwelle.org/avar.cgi">an
\r\nimplementation</a> of that specific piece of code. Upon
\r\ninspection, however, it appears as if all tag data is
\r\nhard-coded into the javascript (which is highly inefficient.</p>

\r\n- This extension needs <a href="http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/">Firefox</a>
